Metal coils, called stents, are advanced through the catheter and implanted into the affected arteries to keep the vessel walls open. New drug-eluting stents are coated with medications that keep the arteries from becoming blocked again from inflammatory responses and tissue regrowth. Stents remain permanently in place.
