Fiber

What is fiber?

Fiber is the part of any food that your body cannot digest. It's found in whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds. Foods high in fiber are usually low in calories, low in fat and high in vitamins and minerals.

Fiber:

  • may help reduce your risk for heart disease
  • may help lower your cholesterol
  • may help lower high blood pressure
  • helps you feel more full longer, helping in weight loss and lowering your risk for diabetes
  • aids in proper digestion and can help prevent colon cancer

How much fiber should I eat?

Women: 25-30 grams per day

Men: 35-40 grams per day

You should increase your fiber intake gradually until you reach your recommended daily amount.

How can I get more fiber?

Eat more fruit and vegetables. Be creative; add fruit to your cereal or have a salad with dinner.

Make sure to always buy bread, cereal or pasta made with 100% whole grain.

You can also add beans, nuts or seeds to your meals or snacks. Ground flax seed is a great source of fiber and is an easy addition sprinkled over cereal or yogurt.

Fiber Supplements

You should know that the very best way to get your daily fiber is through food.

If you feel you may need a fiber supplement, please consult a physician. Fiber supplements may interact with certain types of medication.
